Short Trips: Wauchula

This was the only other plane at the airfield that day. As soon as we taxied up I shot this picture out the Cherokee door. I have a couple of digital cameras, but I strongly prefer film for good stuff. Digitals are good for snap shots, and if you take enough of 'em you're bound to get a couple of good ones, but I like the control and quality of the 35mm SLR Cannon that I've had for over 20 years now. This Yak 52 came complete with proud new owner and huge East European military instructor pilot. They saw us looking over their plane and came over and talked to us.

This particular Yak had belonged to a Russian military aircraft collector in St. Pete, who also owned a couple of Mig jets. Aperrently, the former owner had recently had a terifying experience in the Yak and sold it to these guys for a song. The big dude said he had several thousand hours in these aircraft and that they did have a nasty habit of dropping into an inverted flat spin at the top of a loop, and that's what had happened to the guy in St. Pete. Fortunately, when it happened, the guy had a current F16 pilot in the other seat, and he was able to save it. The former owner said he didn't want to fly it anymore.

This plane uses compressed air for the retracts, as well as the starter. Check out the size of that prop!

ANyway, after I took these shots of them getting ready to continue their trip, they offered to let us sit in it and get a few pictures of us with the plane. I told them that I fully intended to lie about it later and say that Jamie and I flew the Yak, and they said they were OK with that.

Just check out that sky behind us. It was a beautiful day for a short cross country. You've gotta keep an eye on the weather in this part of the state though, because things can change pretty fast. I've been out there and had clouds start forming up all around me, and things got pretty bumpy in a Cessna 150. I'd get bounced up and down over 100 feet sometimes. Once or twice I was in thermals so strong that I had to fight my way back down again.
Shortly after the Yak took off, we left for the return trip to Peter O' too. We encountered a little turbulance and a light rain on the way home, but it was still a great trip. I went back with Julie for a picnic lunch under the Oak on my first real trip with a passenger, but that's on another page. The good news about the airport is that the hurricane season left it virtually unharmed, and you can fly in and get fuel and take a break at a safe place in the middle of nowhere.
